Attack of the Container Gardens…

March 26, 2010

I sent an email out to all future container gardeners at work two weeks ago, and got 22 people who wanted to sign up…Yay! Salads and zucchini bread all summer long!

“As a member of the East Windsor Community Council, I proposed looking into the possibility of doing some container gardening here at the East Windsor UHG site this Spring/Summer.

Right now I’m trying to get an estimate of how many people would be interested this.

I asked the building manager if this was AT ALL possible on the grounds here, and she said yes! Very much so! (Of course we have to sign an insurance waver to the effect of “If I drop a pot on my foot while doing this on the grounds, I will not sue the property owners”, etc.)

I myself had started doing it at home last Spring, planting leaf lettuce and spinach seeds in a window box on my front porch before vacation. I came back two weeks later was rolling in lettuce for weeks. Then I started planting heat-resistant lettuce, swiss chard, tomatoes, zucchini and cucumbers, and had lots of veggies on a regular basis till October.

It was really easy: just watering, no weeding, and the only pest was the occasional slug (who I learned love to perish in tiny bowls stale beer kept near the chard.)

It was a win-win-win situation: I ate great, fresh, pesticide-free food, my nutritional profile improved, and I lost a few pounds from all the salads. Not a bad deal. I also saved a few bucks and lessened my trips to the market.

I figure we can grow lettuce and leaf-type veggies individually, and do bigger veggies like tomatoes, zucchini, etc. collectively, but first I want to get an idea if there is any  interest out there for this.”

NJ can’t be that bad if dolphins want to stay here…

December 27, 2008

I found this from the AP Wire section on Salon.com:

“A group of bottlenose dolphins have been confounding humans since they took up residence in two rivers near the Jersey shore six months ago. Now that it’s winter, some people are worried they’ll never make it out.

Three dolphins have died out of the original group of about 15 that spent the summer and fall in the Shrewsbury and Navesink rivers, waterways just north of Asbury Park.

Federal wildlife experts say the remaining dolphins are healthy, and should be able to make it through the winter if they choose to stay. They cite the cases of dolphins that successfully spent winters in Massachusetts, Virginia and even northern Scotland.”

There’s hope yet…

In Heaven Everything Is Fine…

December 14, 2008

I just finished reading a biography of Peter Ivers called “In Heaven Everything Is Fine”. Ivers composed and sang the haunting song for the “radiator woman” in David Lynch’s “Eraserhead” movie. My sister lent it to me saying that Ivers was the host of “New Wave Theater” on the USA cable station program “Night flight” in the 80′s. What I didn’t realize was I had tapped a song from Ivers from WPRB in Princeton back in the 80′s and had kept it for 20 years, trying to figure out who the singer was.

From the book:

”In Heaven Everything Is Fine” is the lost epic story of Peter Ivers, the biggest star you’ve never heard of. Lost to history in the shadows of better-known friends like Doug Kenney, Harold Ramis, and John Belushi, Peter was the one “they” looked to for creative mischief, artistic integrity, spiritual inspiration, moral guidance, the deepest laughs, and most twisted fun.
